On 6
th January 2012 a BSPB field team observed a Greater White-fronted Goose (
Anser albifrons) with a collar band in the region of Durankulak Lake. The special plastic collar was light-green, with the signs E35. The goose was grazing together with 585 more Greater White-fronted and 6 Red-breasted geese
(Branta ruficollis) in a field with winter wheat with coordinates 43°43'32.24"N, 28°32'46.72"E. The data are submitted to the Bulgarian Ringing Center at The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which coordinates the activities of bird marking in the country.
Several field teams of the EU LIFE+ project “Safe Grounds for Redbreasts” are currently working in the region of coastal Dobrudzha. One of the main activities is preparing the catch of Red-breasted geese which will be fitted with satellite transmitters for the needs of studying the birds’ movements. Studies on the geese’ grazing impact and dispersion, the birds’ use of habitats, the impacts of the hunting pressure and the wind energy parks are also underway.
