28.05.2012

The BSPB was official participant in the 5
th Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the African‐Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) held 14‐18 May 2012, in La Rochelle, France. More than 200 representatives, Government officials, NGOs and relevant experts came together to discuss urgent conservation responses needed to address the many threats facing migratory water birds in the African‐Eurasian region.
AEWA is an international treaty administered by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) dedicated to the conservation of migratory water birds such as pelicans, cranes, storks, terns and flamingos and their habitats throughout their range. "
Migratory water birds and people – sharing wetlands" is the theme of AEWA MOP5. Topics on the agenda of the meeting included: Impacts of power lines, extractive industries, renewable energy developments, agrochemicals, alien species and climate change on migratory water birds, the importance of waterbird monitoring, promotion of twinning schemes and strengthening the implementation of AEWA, particularly in Africa. Numbers of Species Action Plans were adopted including the Red-breasted Goose one and resolutions very relevant to BSPB conservation work - problems with power lines, renewable energy sector and flyway conservation.
The BSPB is hosting the coordination of the AEWA Red-breasted Goose International Working Group, which should have a leading role on the implementation of the SSAP. Useful contacts were established during the meeting with FACE representatives on hunting problems and state officials from range countries of the Egyptian Vulture in Africa.
