AN EXCITING WEEKEND FOR THE FRIENDS OF BIRDS
09.02.2013

A kids’ workshop, an exhibition and a design event were the summit of a glamorous weekend for bird lovers in Varna. "I love waterfowl" was the motto of a fun educational workshop for children and young people that happened on Saturday in the shopping and entertainment center Mall Varna. On February 2, at the initiative of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds children and parents gathered in one place to learn how everyone can help water birds - swans, geese and others. Everyone was able to check how much they know about wetlands and their value, how precious water is, how important birds are to people and how we care about them together.
The workshop "I love waterfowl" was part of the program of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds to celebrate February 2 - World Wetlands Day. On this date in 1971, the Convention on Wetlands, better known as the Ramsar Convention, was signed. In Bulgaria there are 11 wetlands of international significance. These are the Poda lagoon near Burgas, the lakes Atanasovsko, Burgas (Vaya), Srebarna, Durankulak, Shabla, Pomorie, the Ropotamo Complex , Ibisha island, Belene Islands Complex and Karst Complex Dragoman marsh. BSPB traditionally organizes activities throughout the country to raise the awareness of kids and adults about aquatic birds and show them how to enjoy and care for them.
The main message of World Wetlands Day this year focuses on the need to take care of water at the global, regional and local level. Each user of water can contribute to its preservation by simple everyday steps such as collecting rainwater, reducing water consumption at home or supporting the preservation of wetlands that are located near where he/she lives.
The event included a workshop for drawing waterfowl, while the exhibition of the awarded paintings from the contest “Pages from the life of a Red-breasted Goose” served as inspiration to the young artists. The more curious children were challenged with cognitive game on the importance of water.
Sunday offered another original creative initiative. A special "Birds Corner" was opened within a one-day art bazaar for designer home accessories Boho Bazar HOME projectA 3. Visitors were able to enjoy the artistic ideas of Bulgarian authors transforming the world of birds so that they easily find their place in home environment. Everyone had the opportunity to learn about the BSPB campaign "Grain of Love" and open their home or garden for birds. The design event was held on February 3 at Bistro "Europe", Varna.
