THE BSPB STARTS AN AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMME FOR THE REGION OF SHABLA AND DURANKULAK
13.06.2013

The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) starts a pilot agri-environmental program (PAEP) to encourage farmers from the region of Shabla and Durankulak to implement agricultural practices associated with the better protection of the wintering population of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose. The PAEP is implemented within the project "Conservation of the wintering population of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose (Branta ruficollis)", LIFE09 NAT/BG/000230.

The PAEP will provide financial support to farmers for pilot testing and implementing agricultural practices that preserve in greater extent the population of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose, aimed at:

• Providing sufficient quantity and quality of food for the Red-breasted Goose in the period in which the species winters in Bulgaria (October to February);

• Prevention / reduction of disturbance for the Red-breasted Goose during the winter period;

• Improving the quality and quantity of water in the lakes of Shabla and Durankulak;

The PAEP provides grants in the form of compensatory agri-environmental payments. The farmers undertake the agreed activities for a period of two years – season 2013/2014 and seasons 2014/2015, on the territory of the municipality of Shabla.

Applications will be approved and funded by the order of their arrival.

The eligible farm plots should not be located in wind farms and should stand at a distance of at least 500 m from such.

The deadline for submission of applications is 17:30 h on July 1, 2013. Handbook of procedures and application guidelines can be downloaded from the website of BSPB: www.bspb-redbreasts.org/bg/ or received in the  BSPB office.
