THE NUMBER OF WINTERING GEESE IN COASTAL DOBRUDJA IS GROWING
03.02.2014

On February 1st, 2014, a team of LIFE + "Safe Grounds for Redbreasts" held the scheduled monitoring of wintering birds in the area. With the onset of the cold front from the north-east last week, it was normal to expect significantly larger numbers of wintering geese. In support of this expectation came and results - 12 500Redbreasts and 19 000 White-fronted geese. In other words, these numbers are about three times higher than those recorded two weeks earlier, during the mid-winter waterfowl count.

The Redbreasts were roosting mainly in the Durankulak and Shabla Lakes, including the much smaller Shabla Tuzla Lake. Much of Durankulak Lake was locked in ice, and the birds gathered in the few remaining unfrozen pools. The big number of gulls, ducks and swans also shows clearly that winter is in full swing - we observed over 2,000 Mute Swans and flocks of Dalmatian Pelicans heading south.

Other interesting observations include a Saker Falcon near Shabla lake and at least three Pallas's Gulls.
